The Postal Service continues to collect a 4.3% exigent surcharge which will remain in effect until later this summer. That surcharge was approved to permit the agency to collect revenues ostensibly lost during the Great Recession. The PRC has directed the Postal Service to eliminate the surcharge when it has collected revenue that was lost due to economic downturn. The Postal Service has filed an appeal of this decision to continue the surcharge.
The Postal Service’s appeal currently awaits actions by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. If that surcharge becomes permanent, the net effect of it and the newly approved increases could threaten some customers’ financial viability.
