The U.K.’s Royal Mail is automating its parcel sortation machinery at 20 of its busiest mail handling centers to respond to increased competition in the parcel business. Volume rose 3% last year, but revenues only rose 1% because of intense competition from other parcel businesses. Declining volumes of personal and business mail mean parcels accounted for a growing share of Roya; Mail’s revenues. Parcels now produce 41.1% of Royal Mail domestic revenues. Last year it was 40.6%.
