For weeks news organizations, mailing industry experts and bloggers — from all business sectors — have been reporting about the April 10, 2016 price rollbacks. A few have supported the Postal Regulatory Commission’s (PRC) decision to stay firm with their decision to remove the exigent price increase, yet most commentary has expressed amazement that the PRC would not allow the USPS to continue to recover from its losses and allow them to start making a profit; let alone start paying off their huge debt. Even with the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) very logical arguments to balance the books — versus having to be in debt to the Department of Treasury for over 15 billion — did not convince the PRC to reconsider their position.
This huge debt forced the U.S. Government of Accountability Office (GAO) to place the USPS on the GAO 2015 High Risk Report. Stay tuned! The next two financial reporting quarters should prove to be very interesting and we can be sure there will be a lot of opinions being shared on the numbers; let alone opinions as to why the PRC is taking this position and the fate of the nation’s USPS.
